The following call for papers is for an approved session at the =
Northeast Modern Language Association conference, to be held in =
Hartford, CT on March 30-31, 2001. 1-2 page abstracts are due by =
    September 15, 2000.

    History, Tourism, & American Memory=20
This session will consider the relationships between American history =
and popular culture. I am primarily interested in soliciting papers =
which engage with fundamental questions for scholars working with 17th, =
18th, and 19th Century texts: how do our own subject positions as 21st =
Century critics influence our approaches to primary period texts? What =
are the differences between ""high" and "low" tourist productions? What =
are the roles of entertainment, commemoration, and education in the =
representation of the American past? These questions are, of course, =
part of a new and emerging field of work on "American memory," a phrase =
that describes historical work mindful of the gap between Then and Now. =

Examples of topics that this panel could address: How do the witch =
museums in Salem engage with the performative spirit of the 1692 trials? =
How does first-person interpretation in today's living history museums =
function with and against the primary texts upon which interpreters base =
their work? How do Civil War reenactments redefine the field of =
"history"? Abstracts on particular tourist productions or on more =
general, theoretical approaches to the field of American memory are =
    welcome.
