AMERICAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION OF TEXAS 44th ANNUAL MEETING -
    NOVEMBER 16-18, 2000,
    BAYLOR UNIVERSITY, WACO, TEXAS

"Engaging American Studies with Society/ the Engagement of Society with
    American Studies."

    CALL FOR PAPERS

The American Studies Association of Texas invites colleagues in American
Studies and all related disciplines to submit proposals for individual
papers, presentations, performances, roundtables, workshops, or entire
sessions on any topic dealing with American cultures and societies. We
particularly encourage submissions that address the theme of our meeting
"Engaging American Studies with Society/ the Engagement of Society with
American Studies." This theme is a deliberate attempt to overlay the theme
of the American Studies Association 2000 meeting onto the interests and
concerns of those who study cultures and societies of the Americas in the
context of the Southwestern Unities States and Americas to the south.

Our aim is to relate what we do in the classroom and the explanations we
seek in our research and other creative work to the world outside of
academia. How do the questions we ask and the answers we seek relate to the
world around us? What does what we do tell us about what society is, why it
is as it is, and what it might become? What does society tell us about the
relevance our work has or should have to problems of today's American
societies and the issues of tomorrow? Texas is an ideal setting for this
conference, as it forms an integral part of the borderland between the
cultures and societies of the United States and Mexico.

Those wishing to propose a session should submit a session title,
250-word proposal (including the names of participants), and a vita
postmarked no later than September 1, 2000. Those interested in presenting
their individual work must submit a 250-word abstract postmarked no later
than September 15, 2000. Those wanting to serve as a session chair and/or
a discussant should submit a vita and a list of up to 3 sessions topics in
which they are interested by October 1, 2000.

    Submissions should be sent to:
