A Reconsideration of the Work of Caroline Gordon
I would like to propose a panel on Caroline Gordon for the 2001 American
Literature Conference in Boston, with a special (though not exclusive)
emphasis on her short fiction. Particular topics to consider might include:
Gordon's work (both her fiction and her critical writings) in relationship
to the work of Allen Tate and the other Fugitive Poets
Gordon in comparison to some of her better known female contemporaries
(Welty, O'Connor, McCullers, etc.)
Gordon's revision/endorsement of the trope of the "Southern woman"
Gordon's vision of the South and/or the Southern nation
Gordon and theory
Representations of violence in Gordon's works
Representations of the body in Gordon's works
Clearly other topics are possible. I would be especially interested in
essays that position Gordon's work historically, though all approaches are
welcome.
Please submit a 250-500 word abstract by November 18 to:
Dr. David Russell
Penn State York
1031 Edgecomb Ave.

E-mail submissions are welcome as well (preferably in a Word format) at:
If selected, participants will be asked to submit a final draft of the
paper and a short biographical sketch by early May 2001.
Please direct all inquiries to the above e-mail address.
