    Reassessing the Confidence Man
This session aims to reread the figure of the American confidence man as a
body transcribed by culture rather than as a self-contained icon that stands
apart from cultural production and work. Possibilities may include:
Conjunctions between the confidence man and: disruption and excess, class,
landscapes, violence, masculinities, nationality, performance, parody; The
often forgotten confidence woman; The Con-Artist; Classical film
representations of confidence players; The recent surge in novels about
    confidence men and women.
Send detailed abstract (250-500 words) by September 15. You do not need to
be a member of NEMLA to propose a paper, but if your paper is accepted you
must become a member by Nov. 1, 2000. Conference information available at
    www.anna-maria.edu/nemla.
