Call for papers for a panel on Detective Fiction in the 2001 Pacific
Coast Conference on British Studies (PCCBS) to be held April 6-8, 2001
at Stanford University at Stanford, CA.

I would like to propose a panel for the British Studies conference and
    am looking for possible presenters.

Panel being proposed: Murdering Miss Marple

Of course no one wants to murder the famous amateur sleuth really, but
one wonders if the image of the slightly eccentric spinster detective
might do with a makeover. British murder mysteries are arguably the
best around. Fans rave about P.D. James and Ruth Rendell, Margery
Allingham and Ngaio Marsh still enjoy a wide readership, and EVERYONE
knows Agatha Christie! But while American readers devour the prolific
work of British women mystery writers, there are few British female
DETECTIVES who rival the popularity (in America, at least) of a V.I.
Warshawski or Kinsey Milhone. I am proposing a panel that would get to
the bottom of this vexing mystery while shedding some light on the
origins of the image of the British female detective.

Possible paper topics include but are not limited to:
--first female detectives in England (Wilkie Collins's THE LAW AND THE
    LADY, etc.)
    --Agatha Christie
--comparison between male and female British detectives, their modes of
    detection, etc.
--politics of female writers giving voice to male detectives (Christie,
Allingham, Marsh, James, Rendell, George, etc.)
--differences across the Atlantic (contemporary British and American
    female detectives)

Please submit an abstract (250-500 words) by October 15 to
J-Kim6@neiu.edu. Include a short CV and e-mail address or telephone
number at which you can be reached Oct. 15-Nov.1. If you use regular
    mail, send your information to:
