    Call for Papers:
Across boundaries of race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, age and
physical ability, women suffer diminution of their human rights because
they are women. In the United States and globally, grass-roots and
political efforts often fail to improve the daily lives of women. The
alarming gap between human rights principles and socio-political
practices is evident as we confront practical issues affecting women
such as domestic violence, poverty, health care, immigration, criminal
    justice, and employment discrimination.

This conference proposes to address the practical and theoretical
challenges of moving from formal guarantees to substantive gains. We
invite presentations - from scholars and students, from human rights
activists and from creative artists - on the subject of advancing
womenís dignity, integrity, security and status, as a matter of everyday
life, as a matter of human rights. Students, particularly
undergraduates, are encouraged to submit proposals for the SEWSA Student
2001 conference. Preference will be given to work related to women and
human rights in South Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean, although
more general presentations are also welcome.

Please submit 3 copies of a 250-word proposal for a lecture, panel
discussion, creative performance, workshop, poster session, multi-media
exhibit, etc. to be received no later than Monday, October 30th, 2000.
No email or fax submissions please. Include a cover page indicating
either SEWSA 2001 or SEWSA Student 2001, with your name, institutional
affiliation if any, and complete contact information - especially email
address. Please include a SASE or email address for confirmation.

Send SEWSA 2001 and SEWSA Student 2001 proposals to:
