    ** CALL FOR PAPERS **

    BRITISH FORUM FOR ETHNOMUSICOLOGY
    ANNUAL CONFERENCE
    in conjunction with the
Department of Performing Arts, Brunel University

    MUSIC AND POWER
    Friday April 20th-Sunday April 22nd 2001

"With Music is Born Power and its Opposite: Subversion"
    (Jacques Attali)

The 2001 Annual conference of the British Forum for Ethnomusicology will
be hosted by the Department of Performing Arts,Brunel University, and will
held at the University's Riverside Campus at Twickenham in south west
London. The main theme of the conference is Music and Power and
submissions are now invited on any aspect of this theme.

The power of music to communicate, inspire, touch, influence, uplift, heal
and transform has long been recognised, and within ethnomusicology many
have attempted to understand and explain this power. In recent years,
writings by Attali, Foucault and others, together with a growing awareness
of the deep inscribing of power in all social relationships, have focussed
thought on the complex ways in which relations of power are implicated in
the very creation, performance, dissemination, representation and
reception of music. It is envisaged that papers will explore a range of
issues relating to this subject, including, but by no means limited to,
the following topics (which are, of course, very much interrelated and
    overlapping):

Music and Social Discourses of Power/ Music as a Discourse of Social Power:
            Music and political power; music as a negotiation of power;
            music as empowerment; censorship; music and/as social control;
music and/as authority; music as a site of struggle, resistance
            and/or subversion; music and violence; music and repression;
discourses of "authenticity" as social control ...
Who controls the creation, performance, dissemination,
representation, and reception of music? how? why? ...

    Post/Colonialism and Globalisation:
Music and power relationships in a global context; the economic
and socio-political power of the big multinational multimedia
corporations; the impact of global communications, the
internet, satellite technology, etc; the "world beat"
            phenomenon ...

    Music and Economic Power
The power of the consumer/audience; how does the economic power
of music impact on aesthetic choices?; issues of copyright and
            ownership ...

    Gender Power
Music as a means of subverting/reinforcing gendered
hierarchies; the production of masculinity/femininity though
            musical performance ...

    The Power of Music
Music as power; the persuasive power of music; the expressive
            power of music; music and ritual power; music and religion;
music and healing; shamanism as a complex of ritual, political
and social power; identity power through music; creating
communitas through music; music as an educational tool ...

    Ethnomusicology and Power
The power of representation (following on from last year's
Annual Conference theme): who, why and how do
            ethnomusicologists represent?
Empowering the people that we study: what does ethnomusicology
            have to offer?

"All music, any organization of sounds is then a tool for the creation or
consolidation of a community ... noise is inscribed from the start within
the panoply of power ... and since noise is the source of power, power has
always listened to it with fascination ..." (Attali)

Papers should not exceed 20 minutes in length, including all audio/visual
illustrations. Abstracts of approximately 250 words should be submitted
by November 30th 2000 to the address below, including details of all
audio/visual requirements. Film shows and performances may also be
proposed, as may pre-formed panels or workshop sessions (to fit 1 hour and
30 minutes), for which a longer abstract with named speakers (up to 750
words) should be submitted. Those offering submissions will be advised as
to their acceptance or otherwise by 15th December 2000. Where possible,
paper abstracts and all other proposals should be submitted
    electronically.

The conference is scheduled to run alongside "British Braids:
Intercultural Dynamics in the British Isles Today", 19-21 April 2001, a
conference organised by the Cultural Studies Research Group at Brunel.
Delegates registered for BFE 2001 will also be entitled to attend any of
the "British Braids" sessions and we are also planning to hold one joint
conference session. If you are interested in submitting a conference
paper for this joint session or contributing to a joint round-table
discussion, please indicate this clearly on your abstract/proposal.

Student submissions are very welcome, and a number of BFE student
bursaries will be available to students attending the conference to
present a paper. Students intending to apply for a bursary should enclose
a covering letter with their abstract detailing anticipated travelling
costs and including a signed letter of support from their supervisor.
All student participants whose papers are accepted for the conference will
have the non-residential Conference Fee waived (or 15 pounds deducted from
    the full residential student rate).

There will be the usual book display, invited keynote speaker and
conference dinner and party on the Saturday evening, including music
performed by Brunel's Performing Arts Department jazz ensemble.

Brunel's Twickenham Campus is easily accessible by rail and bus (nearest
underground - Richmond station; nearest overland - St Margaret's station).
