CALL FOR PAPERS
Beowulf in our Time:
Teaching Beowulf in Translation
March 23-24, 2001
Kennesaw State University
(Located just north of Atlanta, Georgia)
This conference is for both Anglo-Saxon specialists and non-specialists who teach Beowulf in translation to undergraduates in English and World literature courses.
Guest speakers include:
· Alfred David, Editor of Literature from the Middle Ages (including Seamus Heaney's translation of Beowulf) for The Norton Anthology of English Literature
· R. M. Liuzza, translator of the new, critically acclaimed edition of Beowulf from Broadview Press
· Stephen O. Glosecki, author of Shamanism and Old English Poetry and of a Beowulf translation published serially in the Birmingham Poetry Review
Both Anglo-Saxon specialists and non-specialists are invited to submit proposals for brief 10-minute presentations on best teaching practices as they relate to Beowulf. Suggestions include (but are not limited to):
· film and other popular culture treatments of Beowulf
· children's editions and other translations of Beowulf
· contemporary critical theory and Beowulf
· technology and Beowulf
