    UPDATE: deadline extended

El Dorado & The Dream Of Gold @ The Southwest / Texas Popular Culture Association / American Culture Association March 7-10, 2001 Sheraton Oldtown Hotel Albuquerque, NM

The myth of El Dorado, a hidden land of great wealth and gilded roads, is probably best associated with Renaissance explorers of the New World like Ralegh and Pizarro. However, the myth has manifested itself in many variations since that time, particularly in respect to the gold and silver rushes of California and Nevada. The El Dorado area of the SW/TX PCA/ACA invites proposals for papers and presentations examining any and all aspects of this myth.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to: - Historical and historiographic examinations of the myth - Manifestations of the myth in film, literature and other media - Uses of El Dorado in advertising and other commercial culture (as in the marketing of casino culture here in Nevada)

Of particular interest this year are any examinations of Dreamworks' recent interpretation of the legend in the animated film The Road To El Dorado.

Proposals of no more than 250 words in length should be sent to:

Marc Oxoby Dept. of English University of Nevada, Reno Reno, NV 89557

    (775)786-5068 Oxoby@aol.com

E-mail submissions are encouraged. All proposals are due by December 1st, 2000.
