    CALL FOR PAPERS

    Border Subjects V:
    Global (Dis)Connections

    April 26-27

For Illinois State University's fifth annual Border Subjects Conference we
invite paper or panel proposals on the topic of Global (Dis)Connections.

We welcome considerations of the ways in which economic, cultural, judicial
and/or political processes of globalization forge new forms of both
connection and exclusion. We encourage papers that deal with specific local
manifestations and effects of globalizing processes, as well as with more
broadly conceived theoretical considerations of these processes. We welcome
diverse and creative interpretations of our topic.

    Possible topics:

Discourses of human rights (children's rights, labor rights, women's
    rights, etc.)
The globalization of labor (sweatshops, unions, etc.)
Informal economies (low-capital production and marketing)
    The globalization of consumerism
    Gender and globalization
    Queering the global
    Globalization and education
    Global constructions of the local
    Cultural homogenization and ghettoization
    Local appropriations of the global
    The postcolonial globe
Temporal and spatial aspects of globalization
    Global citizens, immigrants and foreigners
Finance and the mobility of capital
    Global Trade
    Global democracy and/or justice.
Transnational organizations (WTO, IMF, World Bank, World Court, human
    rights organizations)
    Globalization and the environment
    Sovereignty and nation states
    Native cultures
