    Call for Papers

for a panel on Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart

"Poetry and Music: An International Conference" -- University of Liège,
    April 1-4, 2001

We are especially interested in proposals dealing with the following topics:

    - Zappa's experiments with sounds and vocal interaction from *Freak Out*
(1966) to *Civilization Phaze III* (1994)
    - the poetry and lyrics of Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart
    - the cultural poetics of Zappa and Beefheart, especially as regards their
relationship with radical poetic practice and/or traditional forms and idioms
    - Zappa and Beefheart's poetico-musical collaborations in *Bongo Fury* (1975)
    - Zappa as a writer and librettist (*Thing Fish* [1984])
    - the poetics and politics of parody in Zappa and Beefheart

All methodologies are welcome but papers should deal primarily with the
theoretical and practical relationships between contemporary poetry,
poetics and music. Please send abstract only by January 15, 2001 to:
