CALL FOR PAPERS
LAW & CULTURE SESSION
The Southwest/Texas Popular and American Culture Associations are again
meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico for the annual conference March 7-10,
2001. The newly renovated Sheraton "Old Town" Hotel will be the conference
center and headquarters. For reservations, please contact the Sheraton at

The session will concentrate on the interplay between law and culture in the
broadest possible sense. There are no pre-established limits on topic. All
proposals must be received by January 1, 2001, however, earlier submissions
will be appreciated. Please submit your CV with your paper/synopsis. If you
are interested in being a commentator on any topic (see suggestions below)
for the various panels of speakers (which I will assemble and notify),
please indicate so, and include a paragraph explaining the type of panel on
which you would like to serve as a commentator.
Suggestions for topics include -- but by no means are limited to -- the
following:
* Does law shape culture or does culture shape law?
* Law in the global community:
--Law, universal human rights and the American values or ideals.
--Law and the globalization of culture (particularly American
culture) in the age of e-commerce: the Internet and issues of business
norms, intellectual property, privacy and consumerism.
--Law and the international community - the role of non-governmental
organizations (NGOs)
--The multinational corporation and the developing/emerging markets:
a return of colonialism or global commerce?
-- The American culture in today's diverse and global society: Is
there such a thing as the American culture, and what is the role of the rule
of law?
* Law and politics; law, culture, the individual, and democracy -
progress or regress?
* Law and diversity -- where are we heading?
--Images of law and diversity in the media and in society: The
female lawyer -- are we Ally McBeals or Judge Judy? The minority lawyer --
still an absentee or the exotic bird? The female minority lawyer: best of
both worlds or double burden?
--Law, culture, gender issues & women's rights - is feminism dead, alive, or
mutated?
* Law as the force of change and the new faces of America.
* The American lawyer - friend or foe?
* Legal education and the shaping of culture - the role of law
schools.
* Modern legal thoughts and impact on culture and society --
Jurisprudence at work: the American legal scholar, the legal philosopher and
trends in legal thinking.
* Law and the corporate culture - environmental and labor issues and
the questions of ethics and morality
* Age discrimination in the legal profession: mega-law firm and
corporate culture - the partnership track, corporate downsizing, and other
patterns.
* Health law: the AIDS crisis, current issues and development.
* Images of lawyers in the popular culture: myths, tales, pulp fiction
and prime time TV:
--Two decades of images of American justice and equality in the
media (Anita Hill, O.J. Simpson, etc.)
--Merger of the American courtroom and the American living room:
observing and understanding the phenomenon of judges starring in TV shows.
* Law and Literature:
--From The Merchant of Venice to Paperchase and The Firm: Images of
law and lawyers in modern and popular literature and commercial fiction.
--The intended and unintended beneficiaries of the Law and
Literature movement: judicial opinions or John Grisham?
