    CALL FOR PAPERS: NEW DEADLINE OF 10 January, 2001

    The Southwest/Texas American Culture Association

    Cormac McCarthy and his Literary Predecessors

    The Southwest/Texas Popular and American Culture Associations are again
    meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico for the annual conference March 7-10,
    2001. The newly renovated Sheraton "Old Town" Hotel will be the conference
    center and headquarters. For reservations, please contact the Sheraton at

    This Area will concentrate on all aspects of Cormac McCarthy and a
    comparative analysis of the influence of McCarthy's predecessors on a single
    or a group of McCarthy's texts. Different theoretical readings of McCarthy
    and his predecessors will be welcome.

    Subjects to think about such as myth, gender construction, violence, the
    West, religion, representation, language and writing, and/or social
    construction may be helpful to think about in terms of McCarthy and Faulkner,
    Hemingway, Melville, Thoreau, Cather or others.

    All proposals must be received by January 10, 2001, however, earlier
    submissions will be appreciated.

    A 200-word abstract should be sent by Jan. 10 by e-mail, fax, or regular
    mail.
