This call is for papers addressing the relationship(s) between the
American novel and film, for presentation at the annual convention of
the Rocky Mountain MLA.
Papers may address issues/problems of "translation," and related issues of
"loyalty to the text," etc.; they may be comparative studies; or they may
approach a film as reconstruction of a familiar narrative, the way one
might approach the novel Ulysses as a reconstruction of the
epic The Odyssey (i.e. with the notion that the film is not merely
a retelling or "translation," but a separate work of art in and of
itself). Issues of audience response are also welcome (e.g. the
examination of the effect of reading the novel prior to seeing the film,
or vice versa, on the experience of the audience). Of particular interest
are papers addressing novels and films produced after WWII (but
submissions ought not be limited by/to this interest or any of the above
suggestions).
This year the RMMLA convention is will be held October 11-13, 2001, in
Vancouver B.C.
