    2nd Call for Papers
    An International
    and Interdisciplinary Conference:

About Gothics: Imagery, Horror and Cruelty
    (Lodz, May 15-18, 2001)

'Gothic' is one of the literary terms having a tendency to
broaden their meaning. We would like to address a wide range
of issues inspired by Gothics or, in different ways, tied to
them. Recently, in popular culture (especially among
youths), one can observe a growing interest in some motives
connected with the Gothic. It is an interesting phenomenon
from perspectives of various disciplines. Hence we decided
to organise an interdisciplinary conference, in which
    philologists, theorists of film, anthropologists,
philosophers, historians of the arts, psychiatrists and
    others could participate.
    We are interested in:
    - rather Gothic inspirations, not strict Gothic conventions
    - Gothic forms: the classical Gothic novel, horror stories,
ghost stories, horror film, Gothic music, horror drama and
    cruelty theatre
    - Gothic motives in the contemporary culture (in literature,
the arts, film, theatre, advertisement, music and its
surroundings) e.g. hunted castles, houses, dungeons,
labyrinths, intimidated and persecuted women and children,
human beings in madness, paranoia etc.), ghosts, vampires,
    werewolves, images of death
    - Gothic aesthetics: artistic representations of cruelty and
violence, and other ways of artistic evocation of horror
    - Gothic theology: interpretation of the supernatural and
its comparison with other spheres of culture
    - Gothic anthropology: a function of representations of
cruelty and horror in different cultures
    - psychology of horror and cruelty
    - philosophy of fear and cruelty
    - national and international approaches
    - monographic as well as comparative approaches, comparing
different media, genres, arts and cultures
    - theoretical and historical approaches
