Gothic Reflections on Slavery
Panel proposal for the 2001 meeting of the International Gothic Association,
to be held at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, British Columbia
Thursday, June 14 through Sunday, June 17, 2001.
I am seeking one or two papers to round out a panel on Gothic writing
about slavery. The panel considers the strategic use of Gothic
conventions as a means of representing the haunting legacy of North
American and Caribbean slavery and the traumatic erasure of history
impelled by the slave trade. Papers addressing the deployment of
Gothic conventions in anti-slavery poetry and/or nonfiction prose, or
considering the relationship between the Gothic and the sentimental
and/or testimonial modes, are of particular interest.
Send a 1-2 page abstract and a short vita ASAP to Dana Luciano,
