CFP: William Collins, Perspectives and Reappraisal (6/1; 9/3/01-9/4/01)
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Poetry of William Collins: Reconsideration and New Perspectives
(Chester, UK, 3-4 September 2001)
The German William Collins Society is pleased to announce its first
conference on William Collins. The conference will dedicate itself to the
critical reconsideration of Collins within the canon of eighteenth-century
poets. Issues such as lyricism, subjectivity and fragmentation as well as
attempts at periodisation will hopefully be discussed. It is hoped that the
papers will explore Collins' reception and perception by his contemporaries.
Apart from the Odes that have received a fair deal of attention in recent
years, papers discussing the fragments and Collins' earlier poetry would be
welcome.
Collins' outstanding position in the literary history of the
mid-eighteenth-century ought not only to be defined on the basis of the
perception contemporary eighteenth-century critics provide, but Collins'
importance for the Romantics ought to be noted, too. In that respect,
editorial practice as well as artistic use of Collins (in the gothic novel
for instance) could be highlighted, too.
The central section will be dedicated to Collins' various techniques of
originality. His methods of creating novel forms, combinations of traditional
genres and elements, his recurrence to myth and mythology, personification,
prosody as well as what is understood by 'poetic achievement' will be at the
centre of this conference session.
300-word proposals to be sent to the organizer by 1 June 2001. It is planned
to publish the proceedings of the conference. A programme will be sent to the
speakers in early June.
Please send your proposal to Sandro Jung, President of the German William
Collins Society, 6 Abbey Green, Chester CH1 2JH; <A
