    Printing Historical Society Conference, 11 January 2002: 'Printing History:
    New Criteria'

    The Printing Historical Society will host a one-day conference, 11 January
    2002, at the University of Reading, on the theme of the future of printing
    history and the PHS. Reading is home to the Department of Typography in
    which a number of printing historians have worked, and in which are located
    both the Centre for Ephemera Studies and the recently founded Centre for
    Writing, Publishing and Printing History (CWPPH). The Society hopes to
    open a debate about its commitment to the many and varied recent
    developments in printing.

    Call for Papers: Printing history: new criteria

    Issues that might be addressed include:

    What is printing today? the structure of the printing industry; the case
    for the history of recent developments; the computer's effects on the
    industry; the shifting borders between the printing, publishing and
    information industries

    Printing history in the eyes of fine and other private printers

    Printing history as a field of research/ its relationship to the history of
    the book: the learned societies and printing history: the PHS, the CWPPH,
    the Centre for Ephemera Studies, SHARP, IBIS, the Bibliographical
    Societies, the BTHG, the NPHT, etc.; oral histories of the printing and
    publishing industries

    Printing history, the web and other electronic resources: web-based
    resources for research in printing history; the teaching potential of the
    web

    Museum aspects of printing history: the role of artefacts, both those used
    in the production processes (presses and type for examaple), and examples
    of finished products; the role of libraries as museums/archives of the book

    Printing history in the universities: research desiderata and potential;
    does printing history have a place in the undergraduate curriculum? what
    use is printing history to the practising designer?

    The place of printing history in design and print-making histories

    Speakers will have up to 45 minutes each, and proposals of up to 2 pages
    should be submitted by 1 June 2001, to the Conference Committee, via Peggy
