The Powys Society of North America and New School University are proud to
announce the 2001 PSNA conference, "Powys and the Canon," to take place May
11-12, 2001 in New York City. Our keynote speaker will be Temple University
professor Robert Caserio, whose recent book on modern British fiction has
recognized the crucial position of the novels of John Cowper Powys
(1872-1963) in any future negotiation of a twentieth-century canon just now
recovering from the wounds imposed by 'modernist' hierarchies.
Papers are invited particularly on Powys' canonicity and his relationship
with other canonical (and noncanonical) figures. However, proposals will be
entertained on any aspect of Powys' work, as well as papers on T. F. Powys,
Llewelyn Powys, and any of the other Powys siblings, spouses, associates, and
co-conspirators. It is expected that most conference papers will be published
in a future issue of POWYS NOTES, the journal of the PSNA.
Most of the sessions will take place on New York City's Upper West Side. The
conference will also include a walking tour of Greenwich Village and an
inspection of Powys' haunts there (and those venues perhaps haunted by
Powys).
Please submit 250-word proposals by March 1 to BOTH of the conference
organizers, Nicholas Birns at nicbirns@aol.com and Richard Maxwell at
Richard.Maxwell@valpo.edu. If you can only use snail mail, please send them
to Nicholas Birns, Faculty Services Office, New School University, 66 West
Twelfth St., New York, NY 10011 and Richard Maxwell, Department of English,
Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN 46383.
