CULTURE, ETHNICITIES, AND THE DIASPORA in the 21st Century: An
Investigation of Art, Music, Literature, Language, and Film
MARCH 23-24
East Lansing, Michigan
Angela Davis once stated that “progressive art can assist people to learn
not only about the objective forces at work in the society which they
live, but also about the intensely social character of their interior
lives. Ultimately, it can propel people toward social emancipation”. We
are interested in papers and panels that will explore how such a
statement will continue to be true in the new century. We welcome papers
that examine the role of culture in the lives and Diasporic heritage of
Native Americans, Mexican/Chicano/a/Hispanic Americans, African
Americans, Jewish-Americans, Asian Americans, and other racial and ethnic
communities.
Topics might examine but are not restricted to:
--Cultural aesthetics of communities in the 21st century
--The role of language in communities of diasporic culture
--Representation of ethnicity in films, literature, art, music
--notions of bi-racial or racially hybrid culture in literature, film,
music, art
--Film or literature of the immigrant
- -Film or literature concerning political or geographical borders
(Canada, Mexico, etc.)
- - Gender & Class- complicities between class, race, sex, and androgyny
- -The Comprador & Coolie - relations between the powerful & the
powerless
- -Borders, Limits, & Liminal Space - landscapes, geographical spaces,
interstices
---Representation of sexuality in literature, film, art, music
--Film or literature concerning philosophical, moral, temporal,
psychological, ethnic, or racial conflicts
--Musical genres, styles, or cross-over appeal and ideals in racialized
diasporic music culture
