New Approaches to Elizabeth Stuart Phelps
Proposed Special Session for MLA 2001, New Orleans
Although Elizabeth Stuart Phelps wrote over 70 works of fiction, poetry,
and non-fiction, most critical attention has been devoted to her three
"Gates" novels. I would like to expand the conversation about Phelps to
include some of her other works and to contextualize her life and career
more fully than the two current biographies do. For this proposed special
session I invite papers that consider any aspect of Phelps' work. Papers
that focus on works other than the "Gates" novels and that place her work
its cultural and historical contexts will be preferred.
