     The Fourth English Literature Conference

    at Eastern Mediterranean University

Literature and the Poetics/Politics of Space

     May 10 - 11, 2001

          CALL FOR PAPERS
On May 10 - 11, 2001 the Department of English Literature and Humanities =
at Eastern Mediterranean University in North Cyprus will host its fourth =
annual conference on "Literature and the Poetics/Politics of Space".

In his essay, "Of Other Spaces", Michel Foucault claims that: "The =
present epoch will perhaps be above all the epoch of space. We are in =
the epoch of simultaneity: we are in the epoch of juxtaposition, the =
epoch of the near and far, of the side-by-side, of the dispersed". With =
this in mind, we invite papers from various disciplines which will =
address the multifaceted, as well as contested, aspects of space in =
literary and cultural representations. Suggested panel topics may =
    revolve around the following:

*the privileging of time over space

    *spatial metaphors and postcolonial theory

    *the politics/poetics of 'forgotten' spaces

*monumental space and the space of the monument

*the location of memory and longing

    *architecture and social action

*space as the catalyst of history

*psychoanalysis; Imaginary, Symbolic and Real space

    *film and constructions of mise-en-scene

    *subaltern spaces

*performance and theatrical spaces: dance, drama, music

    *literature in cyberspace

    *is space straight?

    *the modern metropolis and myth

    *philosophy as a spatial proposition

    *cultural topographies

    *gendered spaces

    *art and the spatial subject

Interested participants should submit an abstract of no more than 250 =
words by 31 January, 2001. You will be notified by mid-February, 2001. =
Paper presentations should not exceed twenty minutes. Proposals for =
full panels will be considered. Performance artists are also warmly =
invited. Participants should bring copies of their papers to the =
conference in both hard-copy and diskette form (Microsoft Word). =
    Selected proceedings will be published.

We look forward to your participation.
