I invite proposals for a panel at the annual meeting of the North
American Society for the Study of Romancism (NASSR)---The conference will
be held August 16-19, 2001 in Seattle.
    -------------------------

    Romantic Disease

This is fairly accommodating panel which hopes to collect papers which
deal with the various aspects of how the figuration of medicine and
disease played out in the Romantic period. Participants may explore this
from any number of angles, examining such things as how certain beliefs
about disease structured larger concepts about political power,
colonialism, race, and so on, or the way certain diseases/illnesses take
on a uniquely romantic character. One might also explore the ways
Romantic literature itself becomes captivated by the meanings and
theatricality of illness. Biography, medical history, philosophy, and
cultural studies papers will be considered in addition to the literary.
