For a proposed Special Session at the 2001 MLA convention in New
Orleans, we seek to pull together theoretically informed essays that
address the topic of "Negotiating Masculinities in the Works of Robert
    Penn Warren."

We are especially interested in critical applications absent or lacking
in previous explorations of Warren's poetry, essays, or novels. Sample
topical approaches might be: Manhood and Masculinity (Kimmel, Faludi),
identity performativity (Butler), social constructions of the Body
(Grosz), homosociality (Sedgwick), homoeroticism (Woods, Bataille),
racialized queerness, miscegenation, feminism (Ferriss), trauma
(Caruth), simulacra (Baudrillard), or the postmodern "self" (Jameson,
    Lyotard).

Because of MLA's deadlines, 250-word abstracts should be emailed or
postmarked by March 1, 2001, and should include: name of presenter,
mailing address, email address, phone number (home and/or office), and
title of submission. Via surface mail: Nathan G. Tipton, University of
Memphis Department of English, Box 52 Patterson Hall, Memphis, TN
38152, or Aaron Shaheen, University of Georgia Department of English,
Athens, GA 30606. Via email (plain text only): ashaheen@arches.uga.edu
    or ntipton@postoffice.memphis.edu
