FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT and CALL FOR PAPERS
LYRICAL SETTINGS
Early Modern Lyrics in their Cultural Contexts
An international conference hosted by the Department of English,
University of Groningen, The Netherlands,
19-21 November 2001
Submissions are invited for 20-minute papers on aspects of early
modern lyrics in their shifting cultural settings. These “settings” of course
include the music with which the lyrics were first conceived, but will also
extend to the physical and social contexts of writing and performance
(court, household, theatre, church, street) and to the varied modes of
publication (oral, manuscript circulation, print). Papers may also address
the relationships between lyrics and related literary forms, particularly
the more popular genres such as ballads and metrical psalms. The
conference thus aims at a reassessment of the most important contexts –
musical, cultural, historical, critical – in which the early modern lyric may
best be appreciated.
Abstracts of approx. 300 words should be sent to the organisers by the
end of February 2001.
