CFP: Women's Writing 1945-1960
After the Deluge: Women's Writing 1945-1960
A one day conference to be held at De Montfort University, Leicester, England.
on Saturday July 7 2001.
The perception of the 1940s and 1950s as an empty or reactionary period
in women's writing is due for reassessment. British women's writing is
characterised by resistance to and retreat from post-war ideologies of
femininity. Papers might address the following: contesting the domestic,
class, spirituality, poetry, playwriting, popular crime and romance
fictions, and children's literature. Work on individual writers might
include: Elizabeth Bowen, Storm Jameson, Elizabeth Jennings, Doris
Lessing, Iris Murdoch, Kathleen Raine, Edith Sitwell, Stevie Smith,
Muriel Spark, Elizabeth Taylor, Sylvia Townsend Warner, and Rebecca
West.
Speakers include: Julia Briggs, Clare Hanson, Phyllis Lassner, Jane
Marcus, Linden Peach, Deborah Philips, Elaine Showalter, Judy Simons,
and Claire Tylee.
Please send 300 word abstracts to:
Jane Dowson and Imelda Whelehan by 1 March 2001.
