ON MIRACLE GROUND XII - Conference of the International Lawrence Durrell
Society
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lawrence Durrell and His Circle:
A Multicultural Exploration--Past, Present, and Future
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 12th International Lawrence Durrell Conference will be held from June
20-24, 2002, at the University of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The conference
series is titled ON MIRACLE GROUND and the 12th will be called "Lawrence
Durrell and His Circle: a Multicultural Exploration--Past, Present, and
Future." This title suggests a central but not exclusive focus for possible
presentations. We will also deal with writers who were associates of
Durrell, who influenced or were influenced by him, or who can be compared to
him because of similar preoccupations, techniques, or materials, or
comparable interest in modern science, philosophy, theology, or
socio-cultural history. Durrell's uses of the past, his own life and times,
and his place in the future of literary development are all areas for
possible exploration. For information, contact:

The deadlines for proposals are January 15, 2002 (preliminary)
and February 28, 2002 (final).
~~ SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS ~~
The International Lawrence Durrell Society actively encourages graduate
student participation and seeks to support both young and established
scholars new to the study of Durrell’s works or those of his circle. In
particular, we are hoping to involve students and scholars already familiar
with associates of Durrell, such as Saul Bellow, Henry Miller, George
Orwell, and Anaïs Nin. In addition, papers on Nietzsche, Kafka, Eliot,
Skelton and Marlowe, among others, are highly appropriate as influences on
Durrell. We attract scholars from all around the globe, and offer
opportunities for dialogue and research not often available to graduate
students. For information on aspects of the conference dedicated to
graduate student involvement, please contact:

We are inviting the upbeat, off-topic, the experimental and the daring. A
previous background in Durrell’s works is not strictly necessary, since in
large part the focus of this conference will be filling in and expanding the
context, influences of and influences on Durrell and his milieu. Our aim is
to support young scholars in all fields and to promote the study,
understanding and appreciation of Durrell’s works. As young scholars, you
are the future of academia!
Graduate students will have access to all aspects of the conference and
additional options such as mentorship with an established scholar during the
process of submission and presentation, presentation preparation workshops,
round table discussion sessions and an optional pre-conference meeting for
graduate students.
Students may also apply for the $500 US
Annual Durrell Prize For New Scholarship
