The following is a proposed special session for the
2001 MLA Convention in New Orleans:

    "Chairing Small Departments: Politics, protocol,
    and
    pampering.”

    Some topics for consideration:
--When the department is family-sized, (how) can
     we
    keep it together?
--Is it possible to have a strong chair in a small
    department?
--What are the secrets to success or sidestepping
    failure?
--Are rotating chairs or some other system the
    most
    in such a small environment?
--Do 'cliques' or 'camps' surface? Should they?
    Does it matter?
--Any other pertinent, insightful, helpful or (perhaps)
    humorous related subjects.

The planned format is for a panel of a maximum
    of 6
(six) ~ 10-minute papers to be followed by an
    open and
    interactive forum and Q & A session.

Send 1 page abstracts (NO PAPERS YET) by March 1,
    2001 to chesneyt@txwes.edu

    or postmarked by 3/1/01
