Abstracts are welcomed for participation in Graduate course "Writing the
self - writing the other: Postcoloniality and South African Writing" English
    Seminar, University of Zurich 7 - 16 June 2001

Graduate students are invited to submit abstracts (200 words by 15 March)
for papers to be presented at this postgraduate course which is conducted in
combination with the Colloquium South African Writers and Writing hosted by
the English Department of Zurich University during the Summer Semester 2001.

The five-day intensive graduate programme will pursue the theme of 'Writing
the self - writing the other' in a study of South African poetry, the novel,
the short story, and autobiography. After locating South African literature
in the context of broader colonial and postcolonial debates, the
specificities of South African Literature are illuminated with exemplary
texts from the various genres. The general theme of 'Writing the self -
writing the other' creates a basis for comparison with other postcolonial
literatures as well as debates on the discursive construction of identities
and difference in comparative cultural studies.

The graduate programme gives Ph.D. candidates the opportunity to develop
their research interests and attain higher levels of sophistication in
debates identified in the colloquium with the guidance of local and
international specialists and peers. Participants in the graduate programme
will be encouraged to submit their papers to a publication based on
    presentations in the accompanying colloquium.
