Call for Papers Germane to the Following Panel:
Visions of the Modern City
Prior to World War I, the avant-garde poets F. T. Marinetti, Guillaume
Apollinaire and Blaise Cendrars took leading roles in creating a vision of
the city that celebrated the age of industrialism. This vision also
smashed a space/time model, which had its origins in the Renaissance. The
urban aesthetic developed by these poets and their contemporaries was to
have a lasting impact on 20th Century culture. This panel will explore
not only the work of these individuals, but also the origins of their
vision in the 19th Century and the continuation of their ideas into the
present.
This panel is seeking broadly conceived papers from a wide variety of
disciplines in the arts and the humanities.
Instead of the usual twenty minute format utilized at most conferences,
this panel will allow presentations of thirty minutes. This longer period
will enable speakers to develop their arguments in greater detail. Time
will be available for discussion.
Abstracts of no more than 300 words and an abbreviated c.v. should be sent to:
Dr. Edward A. Aiken, Lowe Art Gallery, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY
13244/email: eaaiken@syr.edu. E-mail is preferred. Deadline: March 12,
2001.
