    Call for Papers: Panel session
    The 2001 MLA Annual Convention New Orleans 27 - 30 December 2001

"Southern Africa-North America:Atlantic crossings and encounters"

The Atlantic which binds and divides Southern Africa and North America is
different to the Black Atlantic of the middle passage. This panel seeks to
inquire into the specific nature of Atlantic crossings between Southern
Africa and North America by travellers, exiles, and émigrés, the mutual
ties, representations of each other and the reciprocal influences on
cultural goods and images ranging from literature to the arts.

Abstracts of 300 words on the encounters between Southern Africa and North
America in fiction, non-fiction, and cultural studies are welcomed.

Please submit by 1 March 2001 to
