"Inscribing Italy: The (Other) Tradition": A proposed special session
for SAMLA, November 2001.
In 'Dearest Beloved: The Hawthornes and the Making of the Middle-Class
Family,' T. Walter Herbert notes that in the nineteenth century, Italy
"filled a substantial literature." He notes further that there was a
tradition of "womanly response" to Italy "inaugurated by Germaine de
Stael's 'Corinne; or, Italy.'" This panel aims to explore the "womanly
response" to Italy as it is inscribed in women's literary texts (any
genre). 300 word abstracts by March 15 to Julie Hall, Dept. of English,
Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, TX 77341. Fax: (936)
