programmers, and theorists

Call for Papers and Participation
Frameline, the organizer of the San Francisco International Lesbian & Gay Film
Festival, is hosting Persistent Vision, a conference that will coincide with the
25th anniversary of the festival. From June 17 to 20, 2001, four days of panel
discussions, round tables, workshops, and keynote addresses will look at queer
film and video: where we have been, where we are now, and where we think we are
going ? as academics and theorists, film and video makers, festival programmers
and organizers, and film buffs.
Conference attendees will engage in structured theoretical as well as practical
discussions. Panels and keynote presentations will address the national and
international state of queer media, raising specific ways that film and video
with queer content has impacted upon communities and cultures and how the
existence of lesbian and gay festivals has influenced the production of queer
work. Media makers from around the world attend the festival; Persistent Vision
will engage many as presenters and participants, bringing an exciting
international dialogue to the conference.
Persistent Vision will be organized under a three-track umbrella structure:
academics/theorists, artists/producers, festival
programmers/distributors/industry people.
Academics and theorists are invited to submit proposals for presentation on
topics relevant to the history, current state and future of queer media. Your
paper may investigate, for example, topics such as: queer images in contemporary
cinema, East/West politics and shifting of our gaze ? taking up sexuality in
postcolonial cinema, teaching gay and lesbian media as history, commercial queer
media and assimilationism, past and present AIDS activist video, celebrity, the
breakdown of gender in queer cinema, and subtextual readings of Hollywood
cinema. From aesthetics to ideology, we are looking for texts that will raise
important issues for experimental and independent media, as well as mainstream
film and video.
Conference director Ellen Flanders is currently convening panels and
presentations. If you are an academic or independent scholar and would like to
propose a presentation or paper, please read the submission guidelines below.
For more information about the conference, you may access the Persistent Vision
web site at: www.frameline.org or contact Ellen Flanders at: pv@frameline.org
