For a special session proposal, MLA 2001 (12/27-12/30/01 in New =
Orleans): "Food, Literature, and Culture"
Presentations should attempt to define what food studies means for =
literary and cultural studies; they might address concerns like the =
following:
-- the importance of food in narrative and culture for issues of memory, =
identity, globalisation, postcoloniality and the "practice of everyday =
life"
-- how recipes function narratologically
-- how food images in texts work as ways of "writing the body" or as =
narrative strategies of resistance and empowerment
-- the ability to critique the category of "the national" offered by =
connections between food and ideology
Any literature or language considered. Interdisciplinary approaches are =
particularly encouraged. Presenters MUST be members of MLA by April 1st. =
