********************************************************************** CALL FOR PAPERS <ANGLOPHONE CULTURES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA: APPROPRIATIONS CONTINUITIES CONTEXTS>

An International Conference The Chinese University of Hong Kong 8 - 11 October 2001 Organized by: David Parker, Kwok-kan Tam, Andrew Parkin (Chinese University of Hong Kong) Rudiger Ahrens, Klaus Stierstorfer (University of Wuerzburg, Germany)

ANGLOPHONE CULTURES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA is planned as an international conference to investigate the history, evolution and cultural interactions of the English language in Southeast Asia (understood broadly to include Hong Kong). The primary focus will be literary and linguistic, but we invite contributions on all cultural formations that have been negotiated in English or mediated by it in the region in colonial and postcolonial times,

Contributors might consider the following issues: - What role does the locale play in Southeast Asian creative writings in English? - Is there an Asian voice in Southeast Asian writings in English? - What concepts of "home" and "nation" do we have in Southeast Asian writings in English? - How does Southeast Asia "write back" in the age of globalization? - What is the relation between the nativization of English and the politics of identity in Southeast Asia? - What influence does the English language have on literary writings in Southeast Asian languages? - In what ways do other English cultures (British, American, Australian and Canadian) contribute to the formation of Southeast Asian cultures? - What are the uses of literacy in English for the media and advertising in SE Asia? -How has the use of English been managed officially, by governments, schools, universities in Southeast Asia?

All selected papers will have a solid scholarly basis.

The English Department, Chinese University of Hong Kong will host the conference.

Keynote speakers: Gareth Griffiths, Braj Kachru, Tom McArthur and Edwin Thumboo Abstracts: Should be of 200 words. Please include a short CV including major publications and academic appointments. Deadline: 17 April, 2001
