This proposed panel for the 2001 SAMLA will examine both the tensions
between and the cooperative spirit of American women writers in the 19th
Century. Papers on lesser know women novelists, poets, journalists, and
dramatists are encouraged. Areas of examination can include, but are not
limited to:
- literary mentorship and/or modeling;
- conflicting regional stances;
- conflicting social stances (suffrage, slavery, temperance, etc.);
- women's eductional needs;
- role of the woman writer in America;
- relationship with male writers;
- woman's "place"
