The Society for the Study of Southern Literature (SSSL) will hold its 2002
conference in Lafayette, Louisiana on March 14-16, 2002. The conference's
theme is "Southern Literature in Black and White," and featured speakers
will include Ernest Gaines and John Shelton Reed.
Papers on ALL TOPICS relating to southern literature will be considered.
Because of the conference theme, papers on connections between southern
literature and African American literature will be of particular interest.
We especially encourage submissions dealing with race in southern
literature; black writers as southern writers; black writers on the South,
its history, and its contemporary culture; the influence of the South upon
black literary movements such as the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts
movement, and relationships between black and white southern writers and
texts.
Because of the setting of the conference, papers that examine Louisiana's
various cultures and literatures as a part of the South and southern
literature will also be of interest. Papers and panels focusing on
Louisiana literature and writers, or writers of Cajun and Creole descent
will be especially welcome.
Send 500-word abstracts for individual papers or for each participant on a
panel to Margaret Bauer, Dept. of English, East Carolina University,
