CFP: American Fun. How does "fun" play into the constitution of a U.S.
citizenry? Whether it's, say, the frivolous treat of a culture industry
that would foster a homogenous "nation" of consumers, or the celebratory
joy of ethnic and special-interest groups asserting their heterogeneous
identities, or the narcissistic thrills of death-driven individuals, "fun"
has always been central to the U.S. experience. This proposed panel for the
2001 MLA Convention in New Orleans (Dec. 27-30) welcomes perspectives on
hi-, lo-, and "no"-brow "American fun" that take into account questions of
nation, citizenship, ethnicity, and/or imperialism. Please email cover
letters and 1-page abstracts to John Beckman (jabeckman@ucdavis.edu).
Deadline March 31.
