MLA Convention, New Orleans, December 2001

     Rethinking Enlightenment: Languages, Literacies, Media

The second meeting of the MLA Scottish Literature Discussion Group will
address the cultural and material formations of language and literacy in the
Scottish Enlightenment. The session will take up questions that have been
raised in a number of recent critical projects, e.g. Penny Fielding's work on
literacy and orality, monographs and edited collections on the academic
institution of rhetoric and belles lettres by Thomas Miller and Robert
Crawford, Janet Sorensen's new book on *The Grammar of Empire*, Richard Sher's
work in progress on eighteenth-century Scottish book production, Clifford
Siskin's analysis of literacy as technology, etc. Possible topics might
include: Enlightenment theories, histories, and anthropologies of
language; orality and literacy; the languages of Union / nation /
empire; dialect, jargon, and the standardization of English; the practice and
institution of rhetoric; belles lettres and the formation of literature; print
culture and book production; language and economy, language and
culture; languages of counter-Enlightenment. The format of the meeting will
consist of four or five brief (5-10 minute) position papers, addressing a
particular topic or argument, with a view to opening up the session for
general discussion. We intend the session to complement the Special Session on
Scottish Enlightenment historicism proposed by Maureen Harkin. Inquiries and
proposals please to Ian Duncan <iduncan@oregon.uoregon.edu> by 19 March.
