    CALL FOR PAPERS
    DEBARTOLO CONFERENCE
    ON EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY STUDIES

    QUEEN ANNE’S BOUNTY
    A TERCENTENARY COMMEMORATION
    (1702-2002)

The Department of English at the University of South Florida announces the
Sixteenth Annual DeBartolo Conference on Eighteenth-century Studies, which
will meet in Tampa February 21-23, 2002. The conference will feature
presentations by distinguished scholars Carole Fabricant, W. A. Speck and
    Pat Rogers.

Three hundred years ago Queen Anne took the throne of England, and this
conference is dedicated to the investigation, appreciation, criticism and
understanding of her enduring legacies. The scope of topics is broad,
including history, politics, religion, decorative arts, journalism, court
and society, painting, theatre, literature, philosophy, aesthetics, science
and medicine. Papers might consider some of the era’s vivid images, for
example Defoe in the pillory, Blenheim Palace, the tiny coffins of the Queen
’s many children; or eminent personalities, such as Jonathan Swift, Mary
Delarivière Manley, the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, Pope, Gay, Prior,
Addison and Steele. Anne emblematizes the rising participation and
visibility of women in politics, art, commerce and society, including
Susanna Centlivre, Anne Finch, Jane Barker, Mary Astell and Abigail Masham.
We encourage submissions that deal directly with Queen Anne as well as with
developments that took place under her reign. Papers on relationships with
the colonies, European allies and enemies, and explorations of the rest of
    the world are also welcome.

The DeBartolo Conference is an annual meeting devoted to the
interdisciplinary treatment of a theme in eighteenth-century studies. It
follows a single-session, discussion-oriented format; consequently we are
interested in scholars who are willing to share their research and to
participate in the ongoing discussion. In order to sustain this seminar
quality, we ask conferees to attend as many sessions of the conference as
possible. If you are interested in serving as a moderator, please contact
    the director.
