Update: new deadline
----CALL FOR PAPERS Special Session Chicana/o Literature Before the Movement
Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association Annual Conference 9-11 November 2001 Santa Clara University
Recent archival work by scholars in the field of Chicana/o literature has unearthed a wealth of primary works about Chicana/os during the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While critical work about writers such as Americo Paredes and Jovita Gonzalez has begun to be produced, many works have received little critical consideration. This panel will attempt to shed momentary light on some of these early texts and consider the ways in which they qualify, enhance, and contest our previous assumptions about Chicana/o artistic production and experience in the United States. Papers considering other genres of artistic production--such as music and painting--are also encouraged.
