    CALL FOR PAPERS
Food and Culture-(6/1/01; PCA/ACA 10/18/01-10/21/01). Join us in Puebla,
Mexico, October 18-21 at the 5th Annual Meeting of the Congress of the
Americas. I am accepting until the June 1, 2001, proposals for papers or
performances that address food, cooking, or recipes in a lively and
interdisciplinary context. Presenters in the past have explored everything
from the linguistic system of restaurant menus to feasting and fasting in
Verdi's operas, consumption and pleasure in Martha Stewart's works, recipes
in culinary autobiographies, and the use of "food" spaces by the Taco Shop
Guerrilla Poets. This year's Food and Culture participants will include
anthropologists, sociologists, historians, librarians, linguists, cooks,
literary critics, artists, and creative writers. For more information about
the Congress, go to the website http://www.udlap.mx/congress. For more
specific information about the range of topics covered on the Food and
Culture panels, feel free to contact me directly. Join us in Mexico this
    October!
