The Department of English at Missouri Southern State College invites paper
proposals for the LANGSTON HUGHES CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE, to be held on the
MSSC campus in Joplin, Missouri, from Thursday, January 31 through
Saturday, February 2, 2002.
Joplin is the birthplace of Langston Hughes, and in 1981, Missouri
Southern hosted the very first academic conference devoted to his life and
work. Out of this conference the Langston Hughes Society was born. The
Centennial Conference will bring together pioneers in Hughes studies and a
new generation of Hughes scholars to honor his life and achievements, as
well as to reassess his legacy. The following scholars have agreed to
deliver keynote addresses:
--Arnold Rampersad, Stanford University (Hughes biographer and
co-executor of his estate)
--Dolan Hubbard, Morgan State University (President of the Langston
Hughes Society)
--Akiba Sullivan Harper, Spelman College (Past President of the LHS)
We will consider paper proposals on any aspect of Hughes's life, work, or
legacy, but suggested topics might include Hughes's relationship to any of
the following:
Multiculturalism/the canon
Jazz and the blues
The Harlem Renaissance
Oral traditions
McCarthyism
Africa
The New Negro
America
Modernism
Expatriation/exile
Communism
Children's literature
Contemporary literature
We also strongly encourage proposals on the teaching of Hughes's work in
elementary, secondary, and post-secondary classrooms. Please send typed,
double-spaced proposals of approximately 500 words (no email attachments,
please!) by October 12, 2001, to:
