I am soliciting abstracts by September 15 for a proposed collection of
new essays on contemporary American prison literature. As the
population of U.S. prisons has exploded over the past thirty years, so
has the body of literature about the prison experience, written either
by prisoners or about them. Professional writers such as James Baldwin,
John Cheever, John Edgar Wideman, and Ted Conover have defined one type
of this genre; the central figures of controversial cases such as
Leonard Peltier and Mumia Abu-Jamal have defined another. In addition
to these, there is a rich body of literature written by prisoners who
are neither famous nor professional writers. This wide expanse of
literature offers possibilities for serious critical examination, and I
hope that this collection will both explore the broad range of writings
that might be termed "prison literature" and focus the critical issues
surrounding that literature. Send 2-3 page abstracts along with c.v.
