    CALL FOR PANEL AND PAPER PROPOSALS

    D. H. Lawrence in North America

    The Fifth Congress of the Americas is being held at the University of the
    Americas--Puebla, Mexico, from October 18-21, 2001. Presenters will be
    converging on the city from Latin America, the United States, and other
    parts of the world. The program and its panels tend to be both
    multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary, and panels and individual papers
    may explore aspects of the conference theme, "Civil Society in the
    Americas: Challenges and Opportunities."

    The English writer, D. H. Lawrence, found both challenges and
    opportunities in his encounters with the culture and landscape of North
    America. Papers and panels in this area will consider some of the
    cross-cultural issues raised by Lawrence's engagement with the New World.

    Presentations might explore Lawrence's travels and writings about Mexico
    and New Mexico; his interest in Native American and Hispanic cultures; the
    impact of his North American experience upon his ideas of nature,
    spirituality, society, and leadership; issues of colonialism and
    postcolonialism; similarities and differences between Lawrence's
    representations of the New World and those of other British writers; or
    other people's views of Lawrence as an outside observer. Relevant texts
    and films might include STUDIES IN CLASSIC AMERICAN LITERATURE; THE PLUMED
    SERPENT; MORNINGS IN MEXICO; BIRDS, BEASTS, AND FLOWERS; "The Princess";
    "The Woman Who Rode Away"; "Reflections upon the Death of a Porcupine";
    and THE PRIEST OF LOVE. Proposals that address any aspect of Lawrence's
    encounters with North America will be considered.

    See the conference website for additional information about the Congress
    and to register online: www.udlap.mx/congress.

    The deadline for submitting panel and paper proposals is June 15, 2001,
    but early paper proposals find the most compatible panels. Please submit
    a 100- to 200-word abstract to the area chair by mail, fax, or e-mail.
    Finished papers should be twenty minutes or ten doublespaced pages in
    length.

    Please send proposals or inquiries to Hugh Witemeyer, Department of
    English, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131, USA;
    505.277.5573 (fax); or hughwit@unm.edu (e-mail).
