    CALL FOR PAPERS

A special panel on CHINESE DIASPORA LITERATURE will be organized at the
2002 Annual Meeting of the American Comparative Literature Association. The
conference, with one of its three major themes on DIASPORAS, will be held
in San Juan, Puerto Rico, April 11-14, 2002.

Chinese diaspora literature is becoming internationally phenomenal. The
twentieth century witnessed some of China's most talented writers leave
that country, either in forced exile or out of voluntary choice. Together
with the foreign-born overseas Chinese writers (Chinese Americans, for
instance), these ¨¦migr¨¦ writers have produced an impressive body of
literary writings whose diverse/shared orientations and achievements need
to be examined from fresh and coherent perspectives.

This panel will address issues relevant to Chinese diaspora literature and
    culture, such as:
    ----Chinese nationhood and transnational Chineseness
    ----crosscultural production of representational discourses
    ----identity formation of Chinese diasporas
    ----exilic experience
    ----memory and nostalgia
    ----gender, race, and ethnicity
    ----Chinese versus host languages
    ----history and the individual
    ----politics and literature
----or any issues that either focus on individual writers in any genres
including film or deal with the diasporic literary tradition.

If you are interested, mail, e-mail or fax an abstract of about 300 words
