    The perception of the 1940s and 1950s as an empty or reactionary period in women's writing is due for reassessment. British women's writing is characterised by resistance to and retreat from post-war ideologies of femininity. Papers address the following: the legacy of World War One, contesting the domestic, class, spirituality, poetry, playwriting, popular crime and romance fictions. Work on individual writers includes: Elizabeth Bowen, Elizabeth Jennings, Doris Lessing, Nancy Mitford, Iris Murdoch, Barbara Pym, Stevie Smith, Muriel Spark, Elizabeth Taylor, Sylvia Townsend Warner and Rebecca West.

    Speakers Include: Julia Briggs, Clare Hanson, Mary Joannou, Phyllis Lassner, Linden Peach, Elaine Showalter, Claire Tylee.
