Call For Papers for the American Comparative Literature Association
Conference in San Juan Puerto Rico, April 11-14, 2002

    "Translating" Asia in Global Context

Papers are requested for a panel that will explore issues of "translation"
broadly conceived as it applies to Asian culture and literature,
particularly with regard to its dissemination, migration, transformation,
and deployment around the world, especially, but not only, in the "West."

Possible topics for papers include, but are by no means limited to:

=B7 The applicability of the traditional Fidelity/Freedom dichotomy in
discussing "translations" of various Asian cultures in different contexts?

=B7 Questions about the differing functions of translation as a mode of
literary production in different contexts and periods with respect to Asian
    culture and literature.

=B7 Theoretical models of translation as a mode of literary production
that specifically address the issue of different Asian languages.

=B7 Examination and discussion of specific feats of "translation" of
Asian literatures and cultures with regard to their broader social,
political or cultural significance in their particular geographical and
    historical circumstances.

=B7 Consideration of "Asia" or different Asian formations (such as
nations) as a site of contestation and construction in the articulation of
culture in other geographical and temporal locales.

In general, this panel welcomes all papers addressing issues of
"translating" Asia, though preference will be given to those papers
that go beyond issues of linguistic or cultural "accuracy."

Deadline for submission of paper proposals for this panel will be July 23,
    2001.
