The Politics of Writing Black and Psychoanalytically
The politics of writing black and psychoanalytically in the academy of the
twenty-first century seems to be an emotionally charged, yet dormant
debate. At the heart of this debate lies questions concerning the
scholastic and political efficacy of using psychoanalytic paradigms to
analyze African American literature and culture. Can one write black and
psychoanalytically? This panel seeks papers that move beyond discussions
that merely explore how African-American literature incorporates or calls
for a rewriting of psychoanalytic paradigms by specifically addressing the
analytical purchase of this enterprise - both scholastically and
politically.
Even if one is able to render the act of writing black and
psychoanalytically plausible on a scholastic level, are there political
drawbacks that render this synthesis incommensurable with the progressive
politics ethnic studies was founded upon? This panel ultimately seeks to
generate a conceptual platform that will possibly move the academy a step
closer to qualifying or disqualifying the race-based essentialism that
seems to permeate the politics and practice of African-American literary
criticism. In doing so, this panel also hopes to extend and deepen previous
debates about the ability or inability of so-called High Theory to posit
sound and politically responsible insight into African-American literature
and culture.
Presentations will be 15-20 minutes and all accepted panelists must be
members of NEMLA by March 1, 2002. Please send cover letter, two page
