CALL FOR PAPERS:
A special session at the 26th annual meeting of the Philological Association
of the Carolinas, 21-23 March 2002 in Asheville, North Carolina.
Proposals are invited for any topic exploring intersections between
Shakespeare and film. Although I am interested in proposals that treat
recent film adaptations of Shakespearean texts, such as Kenneth Branagh's
_Love's Labours Lost_ or Michael Almereyda's _Hamlet 2000_, virtually any
topic treating Shakespeare and film adaptations, film history, film and
pedagogy, or film theory and cultural studies is welcome.
Examples of topics include (but are not limited to):
Portrayals of violence and/or nationality in Julie Taymor's_Titus
Andronicus_; The ways in which _Shakespeare in Love_ has affected the way
the Bard is taught/perceived; Kenneth Branagh: popularizer of Shakespeare
(or substitute Franco Zeffirelli for Branagh); Treatments of gender and
sexuality in _Hamlet_ from Sarah Bernhardt to Ethan Hawke; Race and racism
in film versions of _Othello_; Looking for Richard in Ian McKellen's
portrayal of Richard III; The possible reason's behind a given director's
choice of a certain play for a film.
